Jennie Matheny Obituary

On November 24, 2023 Jennie Matheny(nee Chodkowski) passed away; devoted wife for nearly 60 years of the late Ora Lee Matheny Jr.; beloved mother of Bonnie Nicolaus(the late Nick), the late Charles Matheny(Claudia), Daniel Matheny (the late Linda), Karen Matheny (Mark) and the late baby Lee; loving grandmother of Gina(John), Mark Sr(Denise), Bryan(Michael), Barbara(James), and Jason(Heather); loving sister-in-law of Mary Waters; cherished great-grandmother of Ashley(Kenneth), Brittany, Trevor(Magda), Mark Jr(fiancee' Abbey), Andrew(Maya), Faith(fiance' Anthony), Shane, Sydney, and Delaney. Also survived by 12 great-great-grandchildren and many loving nieces, nephews and friends; cherished daughter of the late Mary and the late Joseph Chodkowski; dear sister of the late Stanley Chodkowski, the late Charlotte Rehder(Herman), and the late Theresa Pindel; loving aunt of the late Carol Callaway(Thomas) and great-aunt of the late Stanley Callaway.

Born in Baltimore to Polish immigrants, she overcame extremely humble beginnings. A sweet, smart and resilient woman, worked hard her entire life to help provide for her family, leaving a lasting legacy. Jennie worked at many well known Baltimore businesses, Lever Brothers, G & A Restaurant, Reggerio's, and Herman's Bakery, retiring at age 72.

Married for nearly 60 years to her husband Lee, they raised their 4 children. Lovingly known to most as Nanny, she loved her family dearly and enjoyed being included in their lives and spending time with them, often slipping them some spending money when she saw them. She enjoyed yearly Ocean City vacations, holiday weekend trips to NY, fall vacations to Deep Creek (even riding a horse for the first time at age 75), watching Wheel of Fortune and QVC, family parties, shopping and more shopping, and always her naps.

In her younger years, she was an active member of Prince of Peace Church in Rosedale, belonging to the Hearts & Hands group, helping to make the church's 75th Anniversary quilt. For most of her life, she could be heard saying the Our Father each night just before she fell asleep.

She will leave a hole in our hearts and will be missed by her family and friends.
