Jimmy Smith Obituary

Jimmy Catron Smith, affectionately known to many as Jim, Dad, Mr. Jim, Grandpa Jim, and Smitty, peacefully passed away on January 5, 2025, at the age of 72, after a brief battle with cancer.

Born on March 23, 1952, Jim was a kind-hearted man with gentle eyes who had a deep love for history, baseball, and The Beatles. Jim found joy in spending time with his loyal dog, Lime. He had a love for collecting various items and was passionate about his hobbies. Jim talked daily with his sister, updating her on everything baseball. He bonded over music with his cousins and shared his love of history with his nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. He was never one to shy away from discussing politics.

Jim made sure his daughters knew every Beatles song by heart, took them to Civil War reenactments, and taught them how to shoot at the range. Whether he was writing song lyrics, strumming his guitar, playing with his dogs, enjoying stuffed shells from Pippo’s, or watching his favorite history documentaries and Orioles games, Jim lived a life full of passion and love.

Jim is survived by his daughters, Jaime Skalla (Mark), Caty Wilson (Keith), and Cristy Hickson (David Pratico); his grandchildren, Laila, Cayden, Kylie, Jaylan, Jayden, and Everley; his sister, Linda Mattio (Jack); brother-in-law, Ted Locklear; cousin, Karen Wells (Jim), who was like a sister; his aunt Betty Whisman (Jim); his nieces, Adena Perkins (Jason) and Kami Locklear; his nephew, Vince Mattio (Corie); and many cousins and great-nieces/nephews. He is preceded in death by his son, Keith Smith; parents, Claude and Pat Smith; loving sister, Glenda Locklear; and granddaughters, Grace and Savannah.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to Randy Wasmer, who was a great friend and cousin.

In lieu of flowers, we kindly ask that you consider making memorial contributions in Jim’s name to one of the following: your local animal shelter or the American Cancer Society.

A virtual service will be held on Sunday, January 12th at 3pm EST via meet.google.com/icw-sydn-qas. We will announce a celebration of Jim’s life at a later date.
